The Iconostasis unites the nave of the church to its head, the altar or sanctuary. It contains the most important icons of the church: of Jesus Christ, of the Holy Mother of God and of St. John the Baptist. The doors in the centre are called the Royal Doors and bear the icon of the Annunciation: just as the Annunciation marks the beginning of our salvation, so the opening of the Royal Doors marks the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. The Iconostasis and some of the other more recently acquired icons and furnishings such as the bishops throne are in traditional byzantine style. Much of the earlier decoration, for exble the debased italianate paintings on the pillars, are not in keeping with the orthodox canons. The community will continue to develop the interior of the building so that it more fully expresses the apostolic faith of the Orthodox Church. |
